Emmy nominations announced

When the Emmy Awards are handed out in September, "Mad Men" could win its fifth Emmy as best drama series -- and that would be a record.

It's up against "Downton Abbey," the British-born soap opera that was named best miniseries last year but was switched to the drama category this time around.

Overall, "Mad Men" -- the 1960s advertising-industry drama -- is nominated 17 times, as is the miniseries "American Horror Story." The British-born soap opera "Downton Abbey" has 16 bids, as does the miniseries "Hatfields & McCoys."

Also nominated for best drama series are "Homeland," ''Boardwalk Empire," ''Breaking Bad" and "Game of Thrones."

Emmy voters gave a thumbs-up to some breakout comedies with women at their center -- which are in fashion after the box office success of "Bridesmaids." A best-comedy nod went to the HBO series "Girls," along with acting, writing and directing nominations for Lena Dunham.

A best-comedy-actress nomination went to Zooe Deschanel of "New Girl." Her competitors include Melissa McCarthy of "Mike & Molly," who won last year.

Academy voters paid tribute to the late Kathryn Joosten. She received a supporting actress bid for her role in "Desperate Housewives." Joosten died in June of lung cancer.
