Federal offices in DC to close due to winter storm

WASHINGTON (AP) - The federal government says its offices in the Washington area will be closed Monday due to the winter storm moving into the Mid-Atlantic states.

The Office of Personnel Management says non-emergency personnel in and around Washington are granted excused absences for the day. Emergency employees and telework-ready employees are expected to follow agency policies.

A winter storm warning is in effect for the Washington area from midnight through 6 p.m. Monday. The National Weather Service is predicting 6 to 10 inches of snow is possible. Forecasters say rain will change to freezing rain and sleet overnight. Then heavy snow will fall through Monday.

The federal government's closure will keep tens of thousands of commuters off the roads and rails.
