Gay marriage opponents send message by eating more chicken

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The lines were out the door. Cars were wrapped around the building. People weren't waiting 20 to 30 extra minutes for the chicken.

They were standing in line to stand up for the company cooking it.

"They stand for Christian values on traditional marriage. I do too," said Mike Duncan who visited a Lexington Chick-fil-A today.

Chick-fil-A supporters are eating at the chicken chain's restaurants as the company continues to be criticized for an executive taking a public position against same-sex marriage.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister, declared Wednesday "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day."

A spokeswoman for the Rev. Billy Graham says the 93-year-old evangelist ate a Chick-fil-A lunch, including a chicken sandwich and waffle fries, at his North Carolina home.

Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy told the Baptist Press last month that the Atlanta-based company was "guilty as charged" for backing "the biblical definition of a family." Gay rights groups and others answered with calls for boycotts.

Hundreds of people in central Kentucky showed their support for the company by lining up at locations.

"People have a right to freedom of speech and they can say what they want and give their money to where they want and if it was going the other direction people would be just as angry," said Lindsey Devine.

"It's been a long line, but I think it's definitely worth it," said Christopher Johnson who waited in line longer than usual at a Lexington location today. "I think it's a good cause, and they make great chicken."

Opponents of Cathy's stance have planned "Kiss Mor Chiks" for Friday, asking people of the same sex to show up at Chick-fil-A locations and kiss each other.
