FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The attorney for the director of a liberal Kentucky political fundraising group says his client is a cooperating witness in an FBI investigation into a secret recording of a campaign meeting held by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Ted Shouse represents Shawn Reilly, the executive director of Progress Kentucky. Shouse told The Associated Press on Friday that Reilly met with an assistant U.S. attorney directing the investigation into the tape, which was leaked to Mother Jones magazine.
McConnell asked the FBI to investigate the taping after the magazine published an article this week detailing McConnell's aides discussing opposition research into potential Democratic challengers, including actress Ashley Judd.
Shouse says Reilly didn't record anyone but has provided evidence to the FBI.
The U.S. attorney's office in Louisville declined to comment.
