A mother accused of killing her 6-year-old daughter with scissors told a Las Vegas judge she understands the murder charge against her.

But Danielle Yvonne Slaughter also appeared confused Friday about whether a mandatory evidence hearing should be held quickly or delayed for a full psychiatric evaluation.

Slaughter chose the two-week minimum, and Justice of the Peace Joe M. Bonaventure scheduled the hearing for March 29.

Slaughter's defense lawyer says she's concerned about her 27-year-old client's mental condition and fitness to face charges in the death of Kyla Franks.

Slaughter told police she hadn't slept much after taking a caffeinated weight-loss product, and she felt an "evil presence" before striking her daughter with scissors Sunday.

Slaughter said the girl kicked and clawed her and laughed "in an evil voice."
