WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - The man police say is their only suspect in the killings of two children who turned up last week in a South Florida canal has been ordered held without bond.
Thirty-four-year-old Clem Beauchamp appeared Wednesday in federal court in West Palm Beach on a firearms charge unrelated to the deaths. The children were found stuffed in luggage in Delray Beach last week.
They also suspect Beauchamp in the death of the children's mother, whose body was found last summer in a landfill.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Linnea Johnson refused to appoint a public defender, saying Beauchamp must use his home equity to pay for a lawyer. Beauchamp's sister attended the hearing but declined comment.
Police haven't charged Beauchamp in the children's deaths or their mother's.
