Obama wants to shed rules that hurt job growth

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Obama says he wants to get rid of government regulations that stifle job creation.

He's ordered federal agencies to review regulations and look for unreasonable ones that hurt economic growth.

Obama says he is signing an executive order Monday making it clear that his administration wants to strike the right balance between protecting the public and promoting economic growth.

He made his comments in an opinion column in Tuesday's editions of The Wall Street Journal.

He says Congress and presidents have tinkered with regulations, creating a patchwork of overlapping rules that make the U.S. economy less competitive. Obama says the rules have sometimes placed an unreasonable burden on businesses.

The review could also bring new regulations to address gaps like infant formula safety.
