Obama's Mideast speech offers punishment, praise

WASHINGTON (AP) - Support democratic reforms -- or leave power.
That message from the United States to Syria is expected to be sharpened today by President Barack Obama. He'll be defending new U.S. sanctions targeting Syrian President Bashar Assad (bah-SHAR' AH'-sahd) and other senior leaders, as Syria continues its violent crackdown on anti-government protesters.
Obama will also be announcing aid for Egypt and Tunisia, which are seen as models for positive change in the Middle East.
