NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Officials on the Louisiana barrier island of Grand Isle have called for a mandatory evacuation with Tropical Storm Karen moving through the Gulf of Mexico.
In New Orleans, Sheriff Marlin Gusman announced that he had moved more than 400 inmates from temporary tent facilities to safer state lockups as a precaution.
Karen was weakening but still ready to become the first named storm to hit the U.S. in what has been a quiet hurricane season.
National Hurricane Center forecasters expect Karen to be near the central Gulf Coast on Saturday as a weak hurricane or tropical storm.
A hurricane watch stretched from Grand Isle to west of Destin, Fla. A tropical storm warning was in effect for Morgan City, La., to the mouth of the Pearl River.
