KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Afghan officials say hundreds of insurgents have launched a large attack against police in the remote Nuristan province in the country's northeast.
A provincial police chief says the attack began after daybreak, targeting checkpoints around a base housing police reserve units located near a provincial capital.
About 400 insurgents are taking part in the attack. A spokesman for the provincial governor, confirmed a large attack was under way but had no details on the number of insurgents involved. He says local residents are assisting the police.
There are few NATO or Afghan soldiers in mountainous Nuristan, near the Pakistan border.
