WASHINGTON (AP) - They are locked in nail biters in battleground states of Ohio, Florida and Virginia. At this hour, Obama is leading the race for the presidency - after gaining California. As of 11:00 p.m. Obama had 256 and Romney had 203 electoral votes.
Romney captured Kentucky's eight electoral votes, Indiana, a state won by President Obama four years ago. Romney is also the winner in South Carolina, a state where Obama is deeply unpopular. Those states have 20 electoral votes between them.
Obama has won his home state of Illinois, as well as Mitt Romney's home state of Massachusetts and Vice President Joe Biden's home state of Delaware.
There have been no surprises in the returns so far from Eastern and Midwestern states.
More polls have closed on the East Coast and Midwest. Obama won in Illinois, Michigan, New York, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Washington D.C., Pennsylvania, Minnesota, California, Washington and Hawaii.
Mitt Romney took Oklahoma in the center of the country. The other Romney wins are Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Idaho, Arizona and North Carolina.
An exit poll conducted nationwide today for The Associated Press finds that the economy is still at the top of the list of voter concerns, with 6 in 10 saying it's the biggest issue facing the nation
