MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) - Mitt Romney says "free enterprise will be on trial" during this presidential election -- and he says the attacks are coming not just from the Democrats, but from Newt Gingrich and the other Republican challengers.
Romney is trying to shrug off the fallout from his remark earlier today that he likes "being able to fire people." He said it in the context of letting people change health insurance companies.
But Democrats have quickly circulated the video clip. And Republican candidate Jon Huntsman says unlike Romney, he enjoys "creating jobs," rather than "firing people."
The issue isn't expected to stand in the way of a Romney victory tomorrow in New Hampshire.
Still, his comments played into the growing questions about whether his drive for profits at a private equity firm came at the expense of workers. Gingrich says Romney's firm "apparently looted" the companies it took over.
Romney says he's "happy" to talk about his experience in the private economy.
