San Diego police officer killed in shootout

SAN DIEGO (AP) - A veteran San Diego police officer has been
killed in a shootout at an apartment, where police believe the
gunman is still holed up.

Lt. Andra Brown says San Diego officers were assisting the U.S.
Marshal's Service and probation officers in a check on an assault
with a deadly weapon suspect when the suspect opened fire at 10:45
p.m. Wednesday.

Three officers, including the fatally wounded officer, returned
fire and backed out of the apartment in the Paradise Hills area of
southeast San Diego.

Officers carried the wounded officer out of the building and he
died at a hospital.

A police dog was also wounded.
Brown says SWAT officers are preparing a tactical entry into the
apartment.
