WASHINGTON (AP) - A bipartisan drive to expand background checks is in deep trouble.

The Senate plans to vote today on the proposal and several amendments, including one to expand background checks for gun purchases at gun shows and online. But a growing number of Republicans are declaring their opposition to the measure.

An April survey suggests that 49 percent of Americans favor stricter gun curbs. That's down from 58 percent in January.
