Sleet, ice, deep freeze hit large swath of U.S.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - As north Texas banks on warmer temperatures to melt an icy glaze, most of Virginia is bracing for a storm that already has brought rain, sleet, snow and freezing rain to the state.

Utility crews were at the ready Sunday morning as a freezing rain and sleet coated tree limbs and power lines throughout most of Virginia. The most severe weather radiated out from Richmond to southwestern and western Virginia.

One meteorologist said the state was "getting something of everything." The forecast called for continued freezing rain and sleet through the day.

In North Texas, bitter cold settled in Sunday after sleet, snow and ice had pelted the region. About 400 departures from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport were canceled Sunday. On Interstate 35 north of Dallas, graders with blades to break up thick ice were brought in.
