NEW YORK (AP) - Stocks have steadied on Wall Street, after opening lower.
The day began amid continued recession fears that have sent stocks lower for four days in a row. They were on track for their worst weekly losses since 2008.
Finance ministers from of the world's leading economies pledged early today to take whatever steps are necessary to calm the markets. The statement did little to stem the selling overseas.
Markets in Asia closed sharply lower. The broad STOXX 50 index of European shares was down 1.6 percent.
