Spain: Germany weighing EU aid to Spanish farmers

MADRID (AP) - Spain says the German Chancellor has agreed to consider pushing for EU compensation for Spanish farmers after Germany erroneously blamed its vegetable produce for starting the E. coli outbreak that has now killed 18 people and sickened hundreds of others.
In a website note, the Spanish government says Angela Merkel told Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero by phone that she regretted the damage caused, but said Hamburg authorities who cited Spanish cucumbers as a suspected source of the outbreak had acted in accordance with German law.
The allegation led to a virtual freezing of exports Spanish fruit and vegetables, causing major financial losses for Spanish farmers. It was later retracted.
