Central Ky. high school teacher charged with sexual abuse

GRANT COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - We have information about disturbing accusations against a central Kentucky former high school band director. He's been charged with sexually abusing a 16-year-old.

We're told Kenneth Owens, also known as David Owens, 34, has resigned from Grant County High School. Sheriff's deputies say the victim was one of his former students.

We are told it happened pretty quickly, and within 48 hours of the complaint, Owens resigned and is now behind bars after the sheriff's office arrested and charged him Thursday.

"The kids are upset, very somber," said Tara Hall, who is a concerned parent. "It's just a sad situation."

Court documents show that he was charged with two counts of sexually abusing a former female student. She was 16 years old at the time of the two alleged incidents back in April 2011.

The allegations have come as a shock to many in the community, including one woman who says her daughter attends that high school and also has a cousin in the middle school band.

"It's very disturbing. It's scary. And unfortunately, this isn't the only place it happens. We entrust our children with these people, and our kids look up to them," said Hall.

Officials with the Grant County School District aren't saying much about Owens' arrest. But the school district's attorney released this statement from Superintendent Ron Livingood. "I assure you that the administration of the Grant County School District acted swiftly and decisively to ensure the safety and well-being of our students. That is, and will always be our primary concern."

Owens could not interview with us from the Grant County Detention Center because he does not have visitation rights until Monday.

The 'Grant County Bands' Facebook page says a meeting was held Friday afternoon with the high school principal about the incident. Anyone was invited to attend.

We are told Owens is married to the middle school director of bands and that they have three children together.
