CORBIN, Ky. (WKYT) - Ashley Barton Lawson and her family were supposed to be back in Kentucky this week after they spent their fall break in Florida.
But instead, she's in an Orlando hospital, and her family is by her side while her community in Corbin is sending up a lot of prayers.
Their vacation began as a week of fun filled days at Disney, but while packing the car for the trip home on Sunday, it almost had a tragic end.
“Putting luggage on the luggage rack, she slipped and fell and hit her head on the concrete,” said cousin Holly Powell.
Instead of heading home with her family, the young Corbin woman was headed to an Orlando trauma center.
“She was unconscious. They did a brain scan and it did show a bleed on the brain,” said Powell, adding that no additional bleeding has occurred since then.
Since the accident her family’s Facebook pages have been flooded with calls to pray, well wishes and people around her hometown of Corbin are responding as well.
“We’ve all pulled through, come together. If we have a friend or a family member, that's hurting, we always pull through, pray for each other. Lift them up,” said friend Ashley Taylor.
The 28 year old substitute teacher has regained consciousness and relatives say she has made tremendous improvements, crediting all the prayers that have been said for her.
Wednesday, Ashley's sister tweeted WKYT and said Ashley would be coming home to Corbin sometime this week.
