LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) Some call it the "Cadillac” of vacuum cleaners and now, the high-priced Dyson is becoming a must have on the shopping list of some thieves.

Recently, several vacuums have been stolen from Meijer and Target in Lexington and police say these stolen goods are possibly being sold on the black market.

Within two days of each other, Lexington Police say a man and woman went to the Meijer in Hamburg and stole vacuums worth hundreds of dollars.

But on their second attempt, an employee was able to confront the two in the parking lot.

We’re told the employee was actively watching Anthony Spencer and Sherry Johnson inside the store.

According to documents, the employee saw Spencer put a Dyson vacuum cleaner in his cart, remove the vacuum's security alarm system and leave the store without paying.

A short time later, the alleged criminals were caught.

“They have arrested two people but we think there are several people involved in this crime,” said Sherelle Roberts with the Lexington Police Department.

Roberts believes several people are involved because only one day after those arrests, more Dyson vacuums were reported stolen at Meijer.

“When there is a trending crime like this one, individuals try their hand at it.”

Investigators believe this crime could be tied to the black market.

“Some might say why in the world would you steal a vacuum? But these are high-end vacuum cleaners from $400-$800. Our theory is that people are trading these vacuums for drugs or they are passing them off to a business where they can resell them at a discounted price.”

She says the high-end vacuum cleaners made by Dyson have recently become a major target in retail thefts.

Police are still looking for whoever is responsible for the most recent burglary.

Police are now working with the loss prevention departments at Target and Meijer to prevent future thefts of this nature.
