Teenager accused of running over two gas station clerks with car

POWELL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Two store employees are in the hospital after officials say a teenager ran them over in his car.

The incident left three men behind bars, two women in the hospital and it all started in the parking lot of the Easy Stop on Main Street in Clay City.

Police were called out to the Easy Stop Gas Station around 5:30 Saturday night after receiving reports of an injury accident.

Witnesses told police that 19-year-old Jarrod Fugate of Frenchburg, 25-year-old Zachary Romans of Denniston, and 24-year-old Anthony Romans of Denniston, were causing a disturbance at the gas station.

When asked to leave by the owner, the three men all got into a 1998 Volvo S70 and police say Jarrod Fugate was the driver.

Officials say at that point, Jarrod Fugate accelerated swiftly in reverse and ran over 55-year-old Tammy Curtis of Stanton.

We're told Jarrod Fugate then changed directions and accelerated striking 23-year-old Kayla Rivera of Clay City and 84-year-old Virgel “Ben” Barnett of Clay City before speeding away.

The vehicle was located by the Mt. Sterling Police Department and Jarrod Fugate, Zachary Romans, and Anthony Romans were arrested on local charges.

Jarrod Fugate is charged with three counts of Assault 1st Degree, Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.

Tammy Curtis and Kayla Rivera were both flown from the scene to UK Hospital and are currently listed in stable condition.

Kentucky State Police are handling the investigation.
