Man steals Boone County cruiser then shoots himself in the chest

BOONE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - An Owsley County man has been arrested after deputies say he stole a police cruiser, tried to break into a home and then shot himself.

Police say 27-year-old Joshua Grizzell stole the cruiser sometime Monday morning.

Police believe Grizzell stayed in a wooded area after abandoning the stolen cruiser until around 9:30am when he tried to break into a home on Maher Road in Walton.

Deputies searched the area after reports from several witnesses that he was on the move. When deputies located Grizzel he turned the shotgun on himself and laid in a ditch. After about a half an hour of speaking with a negotiator, Grizzel shot himself in the chest.

Police say his companion, Shane Byrd, has also been charged with two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernailia.

There's no word yet on Grizzell's condition.
