WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The Whitley County community is rallying around their fire damaged animal shelter. The Knox-Whitley Animal Shelter went up in flames Friday night. The fire killed dozens of cats and a dog that were trapped inside.
Whitley County High School junior Jessica Dennis-Bay is working with her church to raise money for the shelter. She is organizing an event called ""Blessing of the Animals." People are invited to bring their pet to the First United Methodist Church to be blessed. Officials will also accept donations. All proceeds will go to the animal shelter.
"I guess it's like anything. If you love something you want to take care of it," said Dennis-Bay.
The event is Wednesday, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m, at the church in Williamsburg.
Shelter officials will set up a structure on site in a few days, it will only hold strays and abandoned animals. Their next goal will be the construction of a temporary shelter. Once that is accomplished, they'll start planning to build a permanent shelter.
