Target: 40M accounts may be involved in breach

The Secret Service says it

MGN Online

NEW YORK (AP) - Target says it's fixed the problem that allowed credit and debit card information on as many as 40 million accounts to be stolen. It says credit card holders can continue to shop at its stores.

But the chain also says customers should check their statements carefully for unauthorized charges.

The accounts are those of customers who swiped their cards at stores in the U.S. between November 27th and December 15th. USA Today reports the possible breach involves the theft of information stored on the magnetic stripe on the backs of consumers' credit cards.

It's unknown if any of the Target locations in Lexington or other parts of Central Kentucky were among those affected.

Target has 1,797 stores in the U.S. and 124 in Canada.

The Secret Service is also investigating the breach.
