Perry County Schools return to normalcy following snow days

BUCKHORN, Ky (WYMT) - You could call it an extended Christmas break or even an early summer vacation. Either way, students in the Perry County School District went back to their classrooms Monday for only the third time in 2014.

At the Buckhorn School, the parking lot is full and the buses are back. According to Physical Education Teacher and Boy's Basketball Coach John Noble, getting to school successfully was a big step forward for students and staff.

"I kind of had the feeling that if we could get today in that I think, maybe, fingers crossed obviously, we would be okay," said Noble.

But despite the ready-to-go books and sharpened pencils, there were still plenty of empty seats in the classrooms. Staff tell WYMT they hope as the week goes on and the weather improves, more and more students will return.

"We are just wanting to get back and really get that first semester finished up and try to get some momentum," said Noble.

The teachers are not the only ones looking for a return to normalcy. At least one student, Timothy Baker, was happy to hear his high school was open again.

"It is something that we have kind of had to get used to, checking the weather. Then you see more snow and just having no school. It has almost got boring," said Baker.

Baker said he has never been away from school for so long.

"For us to pretty much miss the entire month of January has been something new and it is always something different. But you know, variety is the spice of life," said Baker.

He added he hopes this month is a mild one.

"As a senior, I would kind of like to have a summer before I have to go college," said Baker.

Perry County Schools were closed much of January because of snow and water issues.
