Wreck leads to evacuation

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Police had to evacuate several people after they say a driver's smashed through a gas meter, sending that gas spewing out into the area.

Police say the driver was involved in two accidents. First, a non-injury accident at Winchester Road and Dayton Avenue around 10:35, then along E. Seventh Street. Police say the driver lost control and hit the side of a building.

"He heard a noise and I run out and said, 'Oh my God it's a wreck up there!'," Knott said.

Knott and her husband had to leave their home after police evacuated the area due to a gas leak. They say the truck had smashed through a gas meter. Betty Knott says she worries about this street.

"The way they fly up and down here. I do know that they have to be grown 50 or 60 miles an hour. That is a 35 mile zone right there," Knott said.

Emergency workers took the driver to the hospital with what they said were non-life-threatening injuries. Columbia Gas workers got the gas leak fixed within a couple of hours, but there's still quite a cleanup job. Police haven't identified the driver, but said they cited him for driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.
