LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The city of Lexington continues to rally around a Lexington chef.
He recently fell in the kitchen, spilling gallons of boiling sauce, causing serious burns over half of his body.
A fundraiser was held Monday evening at Smiley Pete Publishing in downtown Lexington. It kicked off at 6 p.m. for the owner of Sav's Grill following that kitchen accident.
Organizers say they expect about 1,400 people to attend Monday's event. They say it's all a part of 'A Feast of Love 4 Sav,' raising money to help pay for medical bills and keep his local restaurant running.
It's been nearly two weeks since the accident and already more than $61,000 has been raised for Sav. Organizers say the original goal was $50,000, but now, they are leaning more toward $100,000 with so many people donating.
"On a very personal level, Sav is a member of the community and we're supporters of local businesses, so every one of us has eaten in that restaurant hundreds of times and he's a friend," Robbie Morgan, the event's organizer, told us Monday before the fundraiser.
Several local restaurants are donating food as well as money. For the public, it's $5 a ticket, with all proceeds going to Sav.
His family will also be at Monday's fundraiser with Sav now healing at home. Sav's Grill will reopen Tuesday after being closed for three days.
