LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Lexington Police held a news conference Monday afternoon about the city's 12th homicide. The victim was an elderly man attacked in the parking lot of his apartment building.

Police said Monday they believe the victim, John Tully, 87, knew his attacker and even had a personal relationship with the suspect.

Police say a resident of Old Farm Apartments on Appian Way found Tully injured in a breezeway around 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Witnesses told police they saw a man running away from the apartment complex soon after the time Tully was injured.

Witnesses describe the suspect as a white man in his 20s or 30s who is balding or has very short hair, wearing blue jeans, a black shirt, and tennis shoes, carrying a blue backpack.

"Kind of maybe a UK backpack that he had on. There's also descriptions that we're getting that he fled the area on foot but also may have been on a bicycle," said Lt. Brian Maynard, Lexington Division of Police.

Police describe that bicycle as a purple and orange mountain bike. Both the bike and backpack are pieces of evidence that police believe are important clues in the case.

Tully was taken to UK Hospital with life-threatening injuries Friday evening, but the coroner says Tully died less than two days later from blunt force trauma. Police told WKYT's Jerrika Insco in a press conference that Tully had serious injuries to his head and body. They are still investigating what object was used in the attack.

Also, Lexington Police will not say whether anything was stolen from Tully during the brutal beating.

Tully's death is now being investigated as a homicide, and his family is not commenting at this time.
