SIMPSON COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Kentucky State Police are investigating a murder-suicide at a Kentucky Welcome Center in Simpson County.

The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night at the Kentucky Welcome Center in Franklin along Interstate 65, just past the Tennessee state line.

Kentucky State Police say James Roames, 39, walked up to a car parked at the rest area, pulled out a gun and shot the driver. Witnesses say Roames then killed himself. He died at the Skyline Medical Center in Nashville.

Police have identified the victim as Jamie Plymel, 40, of Spring Hill, Tennessee. Plymel died at the Franklin Medical Center.

Right now, State Police say it appears to be a random shooting, and there was no apparent connection between Plymel and Roames.

"This seems to be a tragic, one-time act. From what we're gathering, the shooter was sitting on a bench there on the grounds. We don't know what provoked him to shoot this innocent bystander sitting in his car," said Kentucky State Police trooper Jonathan Biven.

Plymel's family released a statement Wednesday afternoon. They said he left Franklin, Tennessee around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday to travel to Owensboro, Kentucky, for an appointment with his work. He was talking on the phone with his wife, Stacy, for most of the drive.

Stacy Plymel said after her husband pulled into the rest area, she heard someone come up to his car and tell him to turn off his lights. He told the person the lights were automatic and he would turn them off shortly. Stacy said she heard noises, and Jamie told her he had been shot. She asked him where he was and immediately called police.

Plymel is survived by his wife Stacy and their 8-year-old son.
