Bluegrass Fair kicks off with little traffic woes

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The annual Bluegrass Fair kicked off Thursday night with more rides, food, and events that fans have enjoyed for decades. But this year, some worried construction on Leestown Road would make it harder for people to get to Masterson Station Park.

For more than 50 years, the Bluegrass Fair has opened its gates to thousands and thousands of people.

"We come every year, so I think we'd come no matter what," said Rebecca Kyle, who attended the fair.

But on opening night, the crowd wasn't really a crowd.

"We expected it to be a lot worse," said Kathy Snowden, who attended the fair. "We had been told it was really bad."

Not many made their way to the fair, saying they were fearful of traffic because of the construction on Leestown Road.

"Traffic wasn't bad at all," said Kyle. "We expected delays, but there were no delays."

Others chose to go around the construction with a prize of no lines to wait in.

"We just went out Georgetown Road to Spurr Road and came in the back way. There was nobody on it, so it was pretty easy," said David Strickland, who also attended the fair with his daughter.

"We knew a quicker way from Spurr Road, so we just came that way down 25 from Georgetown," said Kyle.

In the end, those who made it to the Bluegrass Fair say they enjoyed the rides.

"I've been coming to the fair since I was five or six years old," said Snowden.

"She loves coming here, so I bring my daughter. This is our second year," said Strickland.

Organizers have two alternate routes to the fair, so you can avoid traffic woes. Rather than heading out Leestown Road, they're suggesting people follow Georgetown Road to Spurr Road, then follow Spurr Road to the back entrance of Masterson Station Park. They could also follow Old Frankfort Pike to Alexandria Drive to Trailwood Lane to McConnell's Trace. That will bring drivers right to the main entrance of the fairgrounds while avoiding Leestown Road.
