Bullets hit Lexington homes during attempted robbery

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Several homes along a Lexington road were hit by bullets after a robber fired shots at a man who was running away from him.

Police were called to the intersection of East Sixth Street and Elm Tree Lane around noon after two men leaving a store were stopped by a man with a gun.

"He demanded money, one of the victims fled and at that point looks like the suspect fired multiple shots at him," said Sgt. Jody Stowers with Lexington Police.

Those shots hit at least two homes along Elm Tree Lane. Neighbors say the men were walking in an alley behind the homes when the attempted robbery happened.

"I seen him coming around the truck and I heard the shot fired, watched this glass get broke," said Darail Johnson, referencing his neighbor's shattered window.

Johnson said his friend was one of the victims and had cashed a check at the store. Johnson said he believes the robber saw his friend cash the check and chose to target him.

"We heard a gunshot," said Andrea Fulz. "I said to my mother 'Was that a gunshot?' By the time I got through saying that two more shots went off and we took off running."

The robber also took off running. Police are still searching for him. The victims ran to a nearby home. People living on Elm Tree Lane say the spot where the robbery happened is a popular play area for children.

The worker at store where the victim was coming from told WKYT's Victor Puente that police took surveillance video from the store.
