Car breakins on the rise in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Car burglaries in the parking lot of shopping centers and gyms have become a huge problem in Lexington.

Lexington Police say this type of crime is happening all over town, and one of the latest locations to be targeted has been the LA Fitness on Palumbo Drive.

Police say in most car burglary cases, the victims are leaving valuables inside their vehicles in plain site of the criminals.

Chad Walker, a member of the LA Fitness on Palumbo Drive, admits that his wife did leave her purse inside her car, and he says that they recognize it was a mistake. "She had gone in to just get cleaned up after a workout and wasn't in maybe 15-20 minutes and came outside. The glass on her passenger side window was busted out. They had stolen her purse, credit cards, check book, the whole nine yards, left the iPad and things that were more traceable but they did take all the fun stuff and it cost us about two days worth of work."

Walker says he would like to see the gym step up security outside of its building.

A manager inside the LA Fitness on Palumbo Drive says he is aware of the car break-in reports and tells WKYT that they have several signs on the property warning gym members to lock their valuables inside their trunks.

The LA Fitness confirms that they do not have security cameras outside their buildings and at this time the decision to install them would have to go through corporate.

Police say the best advice to prevent yourself from becoming a victim is to avoid leaving valuables inside your vehicles.
