Clark County homeowners fight zoning change that would bring in new rock quarry

CLARK COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A proposal is being discussed that would change the zoning of land near the Clark/Madison border from agricultural to industrial, opening up the way for a new rock quarry. People who live near that land say they intend to fight that change.

The residents of Lisletown Lane say they didn't even know about the proposal until signs were put up on July 22 notifying the public of the meeting.

"You first thought is 'we'll have to move," said Deborah Garrison. "We would be sandwiched in between two rock quarries."

Clark County's director of planning says the proposal would impact the land across the Kentucky River from an existing limestone quarry owned by The Allen Company in Madison County.

The company owns the land in Clark County and has asked that the zoning be changed from agricultural to heavy industry.

"It's been agricultural for all these years, to bring all that in would ruin the reason we're all back here," said Mark Ledford.

The area near the property includes homes and the Lower Howard's Creek nature preserve. The people living there say they already see the effects of the quarry across the river.

"We routinely deal with a lot of dust, windows are constantly dusty, cars are dusty, and daily blasting," Garrison said.

"We get the noise, a constant light from that area, they keep lights on 24 hours," Ledford said.

At a Tuesday night meeting the Clark County Planning Commission will give their recommendation on the proposal, before it's sent on to the fiscal court.

These property owners are trying to put a hold on that move. They say they've hired a lawyer and their first step will be to ask for a continuance on the decision at the meeting.
