Danville church burglary latest in area crime trend

DANVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - First Christian Church in Danville likes to have an open door policy, but not the kind of open doors they found early Wednesday morning after an overnight break in.

"I got a call early this morning from our custodian. When he entered the building, and he was going to our offices, he noticed that they looked like they'd been broken into," recalled Associate Minister Kristi Stuckel.

With splintered door frames and locks broken off, Stuckel and others at the church started taking inventory of what might be missing. It turns out that it wasn't a long list.

"A few dollars here and I think they took a pair of glasses from one of our business administrators," listed the minister who noted that there was more damage than theft.

All the same, it's the fact that a crime was committed that is the real concern, because this happens the week after a rash of burglaries in the neighborhood surrounding the church.

"It does break your heart because you think that the one place that might be sacred to people would be a church, and apparently it wasn't sacred to them," said Stuckel, adding, "We've heard a lot about it from people in our own congregation that have been hit in this area just recently."

The reason it really hurts, Stuckel explained, is because it doesn't seem like there will be an arrest anytime soon, but she's hoping the suspects will be caught.

One neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, said he found a crowbar and bolt cutters in his yard after last week's burglaries. Investigators say they think these crimes are being committed by the same suspects. They say the reports all have a similar mode of entry and the fact that all of the crimes are in the same area.

While the victims wait for answers, the Stuckel said it's time to "forgive and go on," but along the way the church will make some security changes so everyone will feel safe inside the church.
