Deadline nears for switching political parties

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Kentuckians who want to switch political parties and vote as Republicans or Democrats in next May's primary have until Dec. 31 to do so.

Nore Ghibaudy, spokesman for the Jefferson County clerk's office, said that deadline is set by state law.

Voters will be choosing Republican and Democratic nominees for a variety of local government positions, plus judicial seats, legislative posts, and, at the top of the ticket, a U.S. Senate seat.

Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell, seeking re-election to a sixth term, faces a GOP challenge from Louisville businessman Matt Bevin. Democratic front-runner Alison Lundergan Grimes also has a primary, but neither of her opponents is considered a serious threat.

Ghibaudy said people who change parties after January 1 would be allowed only a nonpartisan ballot in the May primary.
