Fayette County students head back to school

LEXINGTON, Ky. After an unexpected week off due to a federal holiday, followed by four snow days in a row, Fayette County students are headed back to school on Monday morning.

Seven days of classes have been canceled so far this school year, which Fayette County Superintendent Tom Shelton says isn't above average. But he acknowledges that next year's school calendar may need to be changed to avoid taking so many days off, and keep from canceling planned off days like Spring Break or Memorial Day.

He tells WKYT's Bill Bryant that he's considering lengthening the school day to make sure that students get in the required classroom time, rather than extending the school year further into the summer.

The last day of classes in Fayette County is scheduled for June 5th.
