Fire forces UK students out of apartments

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Some University of Kentucky students are out of their apartments after a fire.

Emergency crews were called to a home on University Avenue near campus around 12:15 Friday afternoon.

Firefighters tell us when they arrived smoke and flames could be seen from the top of the home.

Firefighters say it was a tough fire to contain.

"The fire gave us a little bit of a problem, the building is split into at least two apartments so we have some void spaces," said Battalion Chief Jim Nantz. "Once we got the entire body of the fire knocked down, it was just chasing down the little fires that get down in those void spaces."

One person was in the downstairs apartment when the fire started, they were able to get out safely.

Both apartments were heavily damaged. Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the fire.
