Fire safety tips offered for Thanksgiving holiday

VERSAILLES, Ky. (AP) - The Kentucky Fire Commission has some reminders for people preparing food during Thanksgiving.

Kentucky Fire Commission Executive Director Ronnie Day says it's easy for cooks to be distracted by friends and family during the holiday.

The commission says turkey frying should be done outside, set up in the middle of the yard rather than next to the home.

Also, keep a fire extinguisher handy in the kitchen and keep clutter off the stove. Don't put glass dishes or lids on the stove or over a burner. Tilt lids away from you when removing from the pan.

Stay in the kitchen while you're cooking, and don't wear loose clothing. Avoid the stove if you're using alcohol or medication, and keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from hot surfaces.
