Inmate's name released in Martin County prison death

INEZ, Ky. (WKYT) - Officials say foul play is suspected in the death of an inmate at a federal prison in Kentucky.

Prison officials at the United State Penitentiary Big Sandy in Martin County say just after 3:00 Monday afternoon an incident occurred between multiple inmates in a housing unit. They tell us several inmates in a housing unit became involved in a fight, and the prison was placed on lock down. One of the inmates, Gregory Kittle, 32, was taken to a hospital in Prestonsburg with life-threatening injuries. He later died.

We're not told what sparked the fight.

The Floyd County Coroner confirms the inmate died around 5:00 p.m. Monday. The U.S. Penitentiary Big Sandy inmate was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officials have not released the name of the inmate yet.

No staff or other inmates were hurt.

The FBI is investigating the incident.
