FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - Governor Beshear said Wednesday in a press conference that the government shutdown is hurting Kentuckians.

One organization that helps less fortunate families heat their homes in the winter is also feeling the impact of the shutdown.

"Many families in Kentucky will be devastated if the federal government does not get its act together," said Governor Steve Beshear Wednesday.

We are 16 days in to the shutdown, and Governor Beshear says the effects from this shutdown will last much longer than that and Kentuckians deserve better.

"We don't act like a bunch of spoiled brats in a food fight in a cafeteria like they've been acting in Washington, D.C.," said Beshear.

The Community Action Center in Lexington has been hurting from day one, with LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. And people will need to turn on their heat soon.

"It's been delayed once. It was supposed to start November 4, and it pushed back to November 12. We believe it's going to be even more of a delay if it even opens," said Cameron Minter with the Community Action Center.

Several programs like food stamps and WIC only have enough funding to last through October 31, but what happens at the end of this month? The governor says a decision concerning state funds being used will come November 1. But even then, nothing is for certain.

A nursing home in Glasgow, Ky. remains unoperational, and veterans unable to get benefits. He says he's taking the shutdown personally.

"These folks aren't aliens from some distant planet. These folks are our friends and neighbors. They're members of our family," Beshear said.

As far as federal parks, the government has allowed some state to use state or private funds to reopen them, but there are no plans to do that in Kentucky.
