Greenup County teen arrested for having gun at homecoming game

A 15-year-old is behind bars after investigators say he brought a loaded gun to Greenup County High School.

It happened around 5:00 Friday night before the school's homecoming football game.

As the football team warmed up and as fans geared up for Friday’s football game, parents received a frightening and unexpected phone call and text from Greenup County High School.

“My first thought was that my daughter was at the football game. I was like wow, because she was there on the campus when it happened,” said Jason Blevins, who has two daughters at the high school.

According to the sheriff, what happened involved a 15-year-old who brought a loaded handgun, extra clip and box of bullets-- all to the school's homecoming game.

“He just raised his shirt up, kind of showed it to them, and put it back down. Of course, football players went right straight to the coach,” said Greenup County Sheriff Kevin Cooper.

The coach went straight to the cops who then put the freshman in cuffs. During questioning, the teenager told police that he never planned to shoot it.

“He did bring the gun with him. He didn't intend on using it or have any real plans for it; he just wanted to be cool,” Cooper said.

“It’s kind of scary in a way because you never know what somebody might do even if they say they're not intending to shoot it or something like that. You never know what's going to happen,” Blevins said.

The sheriff says the student was able to buy the gun off the internet.

“If we can find out who it was that met a 15-year-old boy and sold him a hand-gun then we will want to talk to them along with the A.T.F.”

Now the teen is behind bars, left to wonder if his possible attempt to show off was really worth it.

The student is charged with carrying a gun on school grounds which is a class D felony, carrying a sentence of up to a year in prison.

He is also charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

The student was taken into custody and lodged at the Boyd County Regional Juvenile Detention Center.

No one was injured.
