Police: Gunman tried to run over 2 Lexington police officers

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Gunfire erupted near downtown Lexington about 2:45 Sunday morning when a man fired a gun near a large crowd of people, according to police.

Investigators tell us nearby police officers started running after the shooter who then tried to run them down in a silver SUV.

Police say one of the officers was brushed by a mirror on the SUV.

Investigators believe 27-year-old Kirby Caldwell was the gunman behind the wheel.

They say he hit another car in the area before speeding off on Ashland Avenue. We're told no one was hurt.

"This is a great neighborhood to live in where you can walk to everything but not when there is liquor, fighting, trash. Now there are shootings and an officer was nearly killed. It's not acceptable," said vice president of the Ashland Homeowner's Association Janie Fergus.

She's asking her neighbors to join her for a city council hearing this month to discuss closing the neighborhood bars sooner.

Christopher Stanley says he’s worried violence has become the norm in the area. He tells us he has started closing his restaurant, the Domino’s Pizza on Euclid Avenue, earlier to avoid the late night crowd.

"Eat pizza, drink beer, that's fine but we definitely need to keep the violence to a minimum," he said.

Police tell us Caldwell was driving a SUV with Kentucky license plate number 807 PMP.

We’re told two people were arrested on Euclid Avenue Sunday morning for drunk and disorderly conduct.
