KNOX CO., Ky. (WKYT) - A teenager was killed and two others were injured when they were hit by an ambulance in Knox County.

State police say the ambulance was transporting a patient when it hit three teenagers who were riding bicycles in the median on US 25 in the Gray Community around 10:00 p.m. Saturday.

Samson Callender, 14, was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner.

"I found out and started crying like a baby because he was like my brother," said friend Marcus Hollin.

The two other crash victims were taken to Baptist Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. They were treated and released.

Friends say the boys don't remember much of the crash.

"He said all he remembers was waking up and he said he could taste dirt," said friend Kylin Hutton.

While the accident is under investigation, state police say the ambulance driver won't be charged.

Friends of the boys are trying to cope with the loss of one of their own.

"Seeing our friend die, it shows us that we need to stay closer. One day we'll be losing each other," Hutton said.

Callender attended Lynn Camp High School in Knox County. The school brought in counselors on Monday morning to help students cope. Some counselors were pulled from other schools so they could go classroom to classroom, to make sure everyone is doing alright.

Autopsy results for Callender are pending.

Callendar's mother, Holly Johnson says she feels an emptiness without him.

"It's torn me apart. My insides have shivers and shakes from head to toe. It's killing me," Johnson said.

She says no one should ride their bike on that road and would like to see signs posted prohibiting it on 25. She describes her son as outgoing, athletic and a good kid that stayed out of trouble.

"I lost something that was valuable that can never be replaced," Johnson says.

The O'Neil-Lawson Funeral Home in Corbin will handle his funeral service.
