Joggers say car break-ins are becoming routine at Coldstream Park

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Several car break-ins have been reported in areas along The Legacy Trail over the past couple of months. But the most recent one happened Tuesday night.

Amy Lykins is without a cell phone and a wallet, after she says someone broke into her car and stole her purse. She says it happened sometime between 6:30 and 8:30 Tuesday evening, while she was jogging on the trail. Her car was parked at Coldstream Park.

Lykins says when police arrived, they told her officers respond to similar break-ins in that area almost on a weekly basis. Officials with Lexington police say there haven't been any burglaries reported in that area this month.

In April, WKYT reported that several car break-ins did happen at Coldstream Park. In those break-ins, purses and valuables were stolen from those cars as well.

Lykins says although her purse was hidden inside her car, she hopes other people won't make the same mistake that she did.

"If this is occurring, you know, just make sure you don't bring anything valuable. Mine wasn't in plain sight. I didn't have an alarm on my car, hopefully you have an alarm on your car," says Amy Lykins.

Despite what happened, Lykins says she'll likely be back at The Legacy Trail, but not with any valuables. She says she also plans to park in a different area.

Lykins says she hopes that security cameras will be installed to prevent similar break-ins from happening in the future.
