LEXserv customers receive flyer warning of water cut-off

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – "It's like everything is going up, but your pay is not going up," said Carla Starr, who, like many people, is having a tough time making the most of her finances in a tough economy.

Even though a lot of us are struggling to pay our bills, the City of Lexington will start collecting interest and penalties on late LEXserv bills.

The city started billing these charges out separate from water service last September.

"We want people to pay their bill and we want people to pay on time," said Bill O'Mara, the Commissioner of Finance for the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government.

The city started mailing out flyers, warning folks that in October it'll start collecting on those late account holders.

"If they weren't paying it before, they're not going to pay it now," said Starr. "You cut their water off, they might pay the bill."

That's just what the city plans to do.

"If people are very chronic, we will make steps to terminate their water service in order for them to be motivated to be current and stay current," said O'Mara.

But, customers like Starr have heard it all before.

"How can they cut your water off if you don't pay these fees. They're now separate. Why would you get your water cut off," she said.

Kentucky American Water says even though the sewer/landfill/storm water and water are two are separate billing entities, the cut-off can still occur.

But, O'Mara admits the city is delaying enforcement of this particular penalty.

LEXserve has a quick pay option available online at: http://www.lexingtonky.gov/index.aspx?page=3044

It's not available, however, to those who are in jeopardy of disconnection or have had their water turned off for failure to pay.

Those customers, according to the city, have to pay their bill in person.
