LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, police pulled a car over at the Thorntons gas station off Winchester Road. They say the driver, Mario Warner, was shown to have an arrest warrant and as they attempted to detain him, he made a run for it.

"It's standard for our officers to run the name and the information of the individuals that we're pulling over in the traffic stop," explained Sherelle Roberts, spokeswoman for the Lexington police.

Police say Warner's warrant was for being a persistent felony offender. The officer attempting to stop the man, was hit in the leg by the car as Warner was said to race away.

On the surveillance video you can see a smoke cloud from the back of the car, and just moments after several officers speed off after the suspect. As that is happening, you see an officer walking back to his cruiser with a slight limp.

"The officer is okay, he's been checked out and we'll continue to follow up with his condition. But it's not something where he had to be rushed to the hospital, so he's being checked out," said Roberts.

From the gas station, Warner is said to have lead police on a brief chase toward East Loudon and Eastland Drive. At Eastland, police say Warner ditched his car down the road, sending it rolling into another vehicle, and then into a pole. Officers say no one in that car was injured.

After leaving the car, police said Warner ran off between several buildings in an effort to get away, but he didn't get far before he met up with officers on East Loudon.

According to the jail booking website, Warner is being charged with several counts of fleeing and evading, assault, and wanton endangerment, along with several other charges.
