Lexington vehicle break-in leads to $96,000 theft

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Police are searching for a thief who got away with an estimated $96,000 worth of equipment on Monday.

The victim was staying at the Courtyard Marriott in Hamburg. He came out to his truck and found a window shattered and the truck emptied.

The man was traveling for his work with an oil company and most of the tools were specialized pieces.

"When we talk about larceny from autos we talk about purses, gifts, toys, even change, sunglasses, GPSs, so to see a situation where were talking about $96,000 worth of equipment is a lot," said Sherelle Roberts, spokesperson for Lexington Police.

So far police haven't found any witnesses to the crime. They say the thief was long gone by the time they arrived.

"In this case the victim was inside his room, no one really heard anything so it was a long time between the commission of the theft and the discovery of it," said Robert.

She says thieves will usually target unlocked doors, and often strike when the opportunity presents itself.

"This is a reminder for everyday folks, it doesn't have to be 96,000 dollars worth of equipment, it can be something as small as a pair of sunglasses," she said.

Police say they are looking at surveillance video from the hotel to see if they can get any additional evidence.
