Lexington leaders plan for extreme cold

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Lexington city leaders are making plans to deal with the extreme cold and wintry weather.

The city is prepared and ready to help citizens in need. Warming centers will be made available to all citizens, and shelters for the homeless are in place and alerts have been distributed widely within the community.

As a standing policy, when temperatures are below freezing, the Hope Center, Salvation Army and Arbor Youth Services MASH Drop Inn Center are open 24 hours a day.
The location of the 24-hour centers are: Hope Center Emergency Shelter for Men, 360 W. Loudon Ave., Salvation Army Emergency Shelter for Women and Children, 722 W. Main St., Arbor Youth Services MASH Drop Inn Center (youth 0-17 yrs.), 536 West Third St. and Catholic Action Center, 400 East 5th St.

The location of the daytime warming centers are: Arbor Youth Services, 10 a.m. -4 p.m. drop-in center for youth 18-25, 540 W. Third, Monday and Tuesday, Dunbar Recreation Center, 545 N. Upper St., special extended hours Monday and Tuesday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m., New Life Day Center, 224 North Martin Luther King Blvd., special extended hours Monday and Tuesday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and Senior Citizens Center, 1530 Nicholasville Rd., special extended hours Monday and Tuesday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

People seeking relief from the elements may come at any time and are not required to leave.

Lextran will offer free bus rides for individuals going to an emergency shelter or warming center on Monday and Tuesday. To get a ride to a shelter, call 859.253.4636.

In addition to the cold weather plans, Monday trash pickup will be moved to Wednesday.

Mayor Jim Gray is asking citizens to watch out for their neighbors, particularly the elderly, and people who live alone or those with special needs, and for pets.
