Lexington spending money to make roundabout safer

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It's been frustrating drivers for years, and a WKYT investigation found it had the most crashes of any place in Lexington. WKYT has learned some changes could be on the way to the roundabout on West Reynolds Road.

When city leaders decided to look at ways to spend a surplus of funds, Councilmember Jennifer Mossotti asked them to look at the roundabout at Reynolds Road and Wellington Way. In 2012, the intersection averaged about three wrecks a month.

"Not serious accidents, but a lot of fender benders and it's been brought to my attention and a lot of it's due to people just don't know how to navigate that roundabout. So I spoke with traffic engineering, asking them what they thought may be a remedy," noted Mossotti, "they suggested putting some caution lights in to let people know that they need to reduce their speed, pay attention to what's happening and slow down and learn now to navigate the roundabout."

The lights will cost the city $26,000 and will be placed at each of the three major approaches to the intersection.
