Man arrested after stealing shotgun from car on UK campus

LEXINGTON, Ky. A man is under arrest after UK Police say he broke into a car on campus and stole a shotgun.

Police say he was seen overnight walking on Gazette Avenue with the shotgun in hand. We're told he was armed with the shotgun when he tried to flag down a cab. The driver refused to let him in and instead called police.

After a short chase, 43 year old Mark Brown was arrested across the street from UK Hospital on South Limestone.

UK Police say the shotgun was stolen when Brown broke into a truck parked on campus.

There is a strict policy banning weapons on UK's campus, unless they're secured. But police say that in this case, the owner of the gun is not facing any charges.

"These people were from out of county who came here in a hurry to see a patient who had just been brought to the hospital. So the weapon was not secure. The individual saw the weapon in the vehicle, broke the window out and took the weapon."

Brown faces a list of charges including receiving stolen property and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

Police say they don't believe anyone on campus was in immediate danger.
